St. Philip the Evangelist of Palestine

St. Philip the Evangelist of Palestine and one of the Seventy Apostles sent out by Christ, was also one of the first seven Deacons. St. Philip the Evangelist is not to be confused with St. Philip, one of the 12 Apostles. St. Philip is referred to as the Evangelist based on the following account from the Book of Acts. At the command of an angel of the Lord, St. Philip set out upon the road connecting Jerusalem with Gaza. There he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an official of Empress Candace. The eunuch was reading the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah foretelling Christ’s crucifixion and looking up at him, St. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” He responded, “How can I unless someone guides me.” As St. Philip preached Jesus to him, the eunuch asked if he could be baptized. St. Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The eunuch responded, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” St. Philip performed one of the first baptisms, baptizing the eunuch as the eunuch was journeying back to Ethiopia. St. Philip is commemorated on October 11.
